According to the 1998 WHO definition, therapeutic patient education is an ongoing process, integrated into care, and patient-centred. It includes organised awareness-raising, information, learning and psychosocial support activities regarding the disease, the prescribed treatment, care, hospitalization and the other involved care institutions, as well as the patient's health and disease behaviours. It aims to help the patient and their loved ones understand the disease and treatment, cooperate with caregivers, live as healthily as possible and maintain or improve the quality of life.
